This week’s Wisconsin restaurant pick: 5th Quarter Bar and Grill

I'm about to tell you about a place that's been recommended to me like a thousand times. And you know what? Every single person was right.
5th Quarter Bar and Grill off Horizon Drive in Verona is one of those spots where you walk in and immediately know you're gonna have a good time. I rolled up on a Monday at noon, yeah, middle of the day on a Monday, and this place was absolutely packed. That's when you know it's legit.
The Lowdown
City: Verona, WI
Address: 161 Horizon Dr #110, Verona, WI 53593
The Ambiance

Classic Wisconsin sports bar energy. We're talking a huge bar area, tons of TVs for catching whatever game you want, and this really welcoming "Up North" bar feel that makes you wanna grab a beer and settle in. If you're not into the bar scene, they've got a separate dining room that's a bit quieter, which is clutch.
Here's what really got me though – the owner was there, hands on, working his butt off. Like, actually bringing food and drinks out to tables himself. You don't see that everywhere, and it shows they actually give a damn about their place.
About the Restaurant
5th Quarter opened its doors back in August 2003, and they've been a staple in Verona ever since. Owned by Boomer and Garrett (and the crew), this family-run operation has built a serious reputation for having some of the best bar food in the area. People drive from all over Dane County for this place, and after trying it, I totally get why.
Here's something cool – that Cajun chicken sandwich I ordered? The owner told me it's been the exact same recipe for 22 years. They haven't changed it. When something works, you don't mess with it.
What I Ordered
In typical Troy fashion, I went a little overboard. I got:
The Cajun chicken sandwich (the owner said it was his favorite)
Wings with two different sauces – Boom Boom sauce (which is a Cajun dry rub then tossed in Boom Boom sauce) and Buffalo
Chive fries (recommended by the owner)
My thoughts on the food
Let's talk about these Boom Boom wings because they absolutely stole the show. I was worried they'd be soggy since they came out drenched in sauce, but nope – these had serious crunch. The combination of that Cajun dry rub with the Boom Boom sauce created something I've never tasted before.
The Buffalo wings were fine – really juicy chicken, classic buffalo flavor – but they were a touch soggy compared to the Boom Boom ones. Still good though, earned a solid 8.0.
The Cajun chicken sandwich? Listen, if you're not a fan of bold, spicy flavors, skip this one. They don't hold back on the Cajun seasoning – we're talking LOADED. But if you're into it, it's fantastic. Grilled chicken breast with peppers, melted (not just slapped on) pepper jack cheese, all on a brioche bun. The owner's been making it the same way for 22 years and I can see why.
Those chive fries with the homemade ranch? Perfect crunch on the outside, soft in the middle. Simple but done right.
Important & interesting info:
Fish Fry: They're famous for their Friday night fish fry – special Friday menu from 4pm-9pm includes Lake Perch, Cod, and Shrimp (the Cajun fish fry gets rave reviews)
Meat Raffles: They host meat raffles on weekends – a total Wisconsin tradition that people actually leave other meat raffles to come here for
Great Burgers: The 5th Quarter Burger is a fan favorite that people order repeatedly
The Vibe: Over 16 TVs throughout the venue with 10 rotating tap lines
Member rewards card available for frequent visitors
Bar area is cash-only with an ATM on site
Conclusion

5th Quarter Bar and Grill off Horizon Drive in Verona is serving up really good bar food with owners who actually care about what they're putting out. If you're in the Madison, Fitchburg, or Verona area, go check it out. Get the Boom Boom wings tossed in cajun dry rub – trust me on this one. And if you're there on a Friday night, don't skip the fish fry. This place has been around for over 20 years for a reason, and after trying it, I totally get the hype. I'll definitely be back for those wings.
