This week’s Wisconsin restaurant pick: Banzo

Banzo Rice Plate & Sandwich
I asked a stranger on the street:
“What’s your favorite restaurant in or around Madison?”
He said:
“BANZO.”
So naturally… I had to go.
Let me tell you how it went.
The Lowdown
City: Madison, WI
Address: 2101 Sherman Ave, Madison, WI 53704
The Ambiance

It looks like this little blue-green house on Sherman Ave that you could easily drive past if you weren’t paying attention.
Tiny inside.
Super casual.
Very East Side Madison energy.
Not a fancy Mediterranean restaurant at all.
More like:
“grab your food, sit outside, enjoy the weather, and accidentally eat an entire bowl in 7 minutes.”
There’s limited seating inside, but the outdoor setup is honestly the move anyway if it’s nice out.
When I went it was like 81 and sunny and it felt illegal to eat in my car.
About the restaurant:
Banzo basically became known around Madison for one thing:
Falafel.
And after researching this place online for way too long…
people are borderline emotionally attached to it.
Reddit threads.
Facebook groups.
Google reviews.
Everybody keeps saying the same stuff:
👉 some of the best falafel in Madison
👉 fresh ingredients
👉 unique sauces
👉 super consistent
One thing I noticed too:
Even people debating “best Mediterranean food in Madison” still almost always bring up Banzo.
That’s usually a good sign.
They also do some different falafel variations besides the traditional stuff, which a lot of locals online seem obsessed with.
But yeah…
the main takeaway is:
this place built a reputation around falafel and absolutely delivered on it.
What I Ordered
Went with:
F Bomb Bowl
Falafel
Shawarma chicken
Yogurt dill sauce
Red chili sauce
Comes w/ hummus
Simple lineup.
My thoughts on the food
Falafel
Yeah… immediately understood the hype. Crispy outside, soft inside, crazy flavorful. Honestly one of those foods where after one bite you kinda stop talking for a second.
Red chili sauce
This made the bowl for me. Little kick, little heat, balanced everything out perfectly.
Shawarma chicken
Super solid. I’d still probably go heavy falafel next time though because that was easily the standout.
Hummus
This was the only thing I was kinda mixed on at first. Had more of a yogurt-heavy taste than I expected. Not bad at all, just different than what I had in my head.
The bowl overall
Weirdly got better with every bite. At first I thought the yogurt flavor was overpowering a little… then halfway through I was fully locked in and destroying the entire thing.
Portion size
Okay. Not big, not small.
Important & interesting info:
What people constantly say online:
Banzo is one of the best falafel spots in Madison. This came up over and over again.Best first order:
Anything with falafel. Seriously.Good weather spot:
Outdoor seating here in summer is elite.Good to know:
Seating inside is limited, so this feels more like a quick casual pickup/lunch type spot.Price point:
Bowls are a little pricey… but honestly everything is expensive now and the portions are solid.Local reputation:
This place has a legit East Side Madison cult following.
Conclusion

Banzo feels like one of those places that Madison locals have already quietly agreed is good.
No huge gimmick.
No crazy over-the-top menu.
Just really good Mediterranean food with absolutely ridiculous falafel.
And honestly?
That’s enough.
I’ll definitely be back.
Probably sooner than my wallet wants me to be.
