My favorite burgers in Madison, so far:

Quick take:

I didn’t expect Madison to have this many legit burger spots.

But after going down the rabbit hole (and eating way too many burgers), there are a few places I keep coming back to.

Not because they’re trendy.
Not because they’re expensive.

Because they just flat out deliver.

Here are my current favorites 👇

Oakcrest Tavern

📍 5371 Old Middleton Rd, Madison, WI 53705

This place is lowkey chaos in the best way.

Small, always busy, and zero effort put into trying to impress you. It’s just a bar that happens to serve one of the best burgers in the area.

And based on Reddit threads alone… this isn’t exactly a secret.

Thoughts on the food

If we’re talking straight-up cheeseburger

This is your winner.

  • Perfect size (not massive, not tiny)

  • The bun is ridiculous. Genuinely one of the best I’ve had

  • Everything just fits together really well

It just has that “it factor.”

Only knock?

  • Could use a little more seasoning on the patty

  • Price feels maybe a dollar high for the size

Other interesting info

  • Constantly shows up in “best burger in Madison” debates online

  • Small spot = expect a wait at peak times

  • One of the best fish fry’s in Madison

Village Green

📍 7508 Hubbard Ave, Middleton, WI 53562

You can tell this is a regulars spot.

Thoughts on the food:

👉 Best bang-for-your-buck burger right now

  • Double cheeseburger for around $12

  • Big portion, this thing is not small

  • Cheese melted exactly how you want it

Very similar to Oakcrest, could use a little more seasoning on the patty

But again… you’re getting a lot of burger for the price, and it delivers.

Other interesting info

  • People online constantly bring up the value.. it’s kind of their thing

  • More of a “go sit down and eat” vs quick in-and-out

  • Easy place to bring someone who doesn’t want anything fancy

Licari’s Bar & Grill

📍 1405 Emil St, Madison, WI 53713

This is where things start to get fun. Feels like a normal bar until the food comes out… and then you realize they’re not messing around.

Definitely falls into that underrated category.

Thoughts on the food

I went with the Pull Tab Burger… which is honestly absurd in the best way.

  • Jalapeño poppers on the burger

  • Cream cheese + aioli + beef all hitting at once

  • Big, messy, borderline unmanageable

But somehow it all works.

This is not a “clean” burger. This is a:
👉 lean forward, grab extra napkins, and commit to it burger.

And flavor-wise… it absolutely delivers.

Other interesting info

  • This is more of a “specialty burger” spot vs classic

  • Yelp reviews constantly mention how over-the-top (in a good way) their burgers are

  • Good place to go when you want something different than a standard cheeseburger

Player’s Sports Bar

📍 2013 Winnebago St, Madison, WI 53704

Classic sports bar setup.

Games on. Drinks flowing. Nothing complicated.

But the food? Better than you’d expect.

Thoughts on the food

I got the Going Bananas burger… and honestly, that name alone should tell you what you’re getting into.

  • Banana peppers

  • Pepper jack cheese

  • Burger cooked almost perfectly

It’s got a little kick, a lot of flavor, and it just works.

This is one of those burgers where you don’t overthink it, you just enjoy it.

Other interesting info

  • Strong option for watching a game + actually eating good food

  • Menu has range if you’re with people

  • Known locally for being consistent, which matters more than hype

Conclusion

Here’s how this really shakes out:

  • Oakcrest → best pure cheeseburger

  • Village Green → best value

  • Licari’s → best wildcard / messy flavor bomb

  • Players → best sports bar burger that overdelivers

If I’m sending someone to just one?

Shit… idk. I could make an argument for any of these.
