This week’s Wisconsin restaurant pick: Chicken Licks

Ya’ll, this is the No. 1 wing spot in all of Wisconsin, according to folks in Wisconsin.

Out of 2,146 comments on my post asking where to go, Chicken Licks was the most recommended place. And after three pounds of wings? I get it.

The Lowdown

  • City: Sun Prairie, WI

  • Address: 5508 County Rd N, Ste 3, Sun Prairie, WI 53590

The Ambiance

Classic Wisconsin dive bar. You pull up to what looks like a house off County Road N, walk in, and boom… you're hit with that scratch-made dry rub smell. The place was already filling up by 11:30 AM on a weekday, which tells you everything. It's the kind of spot where you order at the bar, grab a stool, and settle in. Pool table in the corner. Jukebox humming.

Nothing fancy, just pure dive bar energy done right.

About the Restaurant

This place has been slinging wings since 2010 (fun fact: it used to be called "Chicken Lips" until a trademark dispute made them change it).

Owner Steve Ginter created that signature Nashville-style dry rub after traveling internationally, and it's become legendary in the Madison area. They've won Madison.com's best chicken wings award four years running. They go through 15,000 pounds of fresh, never-frozen wings every week.

The menu is simple: wings, burgers, fried sides. But they do it all incredibly well. The dry rub goes on everything from wings to cheese curds to fries.

What I Ordered

In typical Troy fashion, I went a little overboard. I got:

  • One order dry rub wings (10-12 wings)

  • One order original wings with buffalo sauce (10-12 wings)

  • Miller High Life

  • Blue cheese dip

My thoughts on the food

Let me be clear: I hate blue cheese. I think it tastes like paint.

But their homemade blue cheese? Different story.

I don't know what they do at Chicken Licks, and maybe I don't want to know, but it was incredible. It paired perfectly with those original wings.

The dry rub hit me first.

The second I bit in, I knew…. the salt, the flavor, the seasoning crusted on perfectly gold. Phenomenal.

Then I tried the original wings, and holy hell. These wings were so saucy, caked on, and the heat was just right. Not too mild, not face-melting, just perfect.

The wings themselves? Crispy outside, juicy inside. Cooked flawlessly. I was planning to save some for my father-in-law, but I couldn't stop. I inhaled three pounds of wings and have zero regrets.

Important & interesting info:

  • The blue cheese is made in-house and converts blue cheese haters (trust me)

  • You can get wings "extra sexy" if you want serious heat - some people order 10x or 12x sexy for the true fire experience

  • The dry rub seasoning is proprietary and goes on literally everything

  • Get here early or expect a wait - this place gets packed on weekends

  • They've got an outdoor patio for when the weather's nice

  • The bar opens at 11 AM every day and stays open until 2 AM

Conclusion

9.0 out of 10.

If you're anywhere within an hour of Sun Prairie, make the drive. These are legitimately some of the best wings you'll find in Wisconsin. The dry rub is addictive, the original sauce is perfectly balanced, and that blue cheese will change your mind about blue cheese forever.

Chicken Licks isn't trying to be fancy. It's a dive bar in the countryside that happens to serve wings so good they've become a Madison-area pilgrimage site.

Mission accomplished.
