This week’s Wisconsin restaurant pick: Fosdal Home Bakery

Hundreds of you told me this was the #1 rated bakery in and around Madison.

So we finally made the drive to downtown Stoughton to see what the hype was about. And I’ll say this up front:

If you love old-school bakeries with glass cases full of donuts and prices that feel illegal in 2026… this is your place.

We got two donuts.

Total: $2.70.

Yes. Two.

The Lowdown

  • City: Stoughton, WI

  • Address: 108 W Main St, Stoughton, WI 53589

The Ambiance

This is not trendy.
This is not aesthetic.
This is not “industrial chic.”

This is:

  • Glass display case on the left

  • A few small tables on the right

  • Downtown Stoughton charm everywhere

  • Zero fluff. Just baked goods.

It feels like the kind of place that’s been doing the same thing for decades and never needed to change.

Which, based on the reviews, is exactly why people love it.

About the restaurant:

Fosdal Home Bakery is a longtime, family-owned bakery right in the heart of downtown Stoughton.

Google has them sitting around 4.9 stars with 590+ reviews, and people consistently call it:

  • “Best donuts in the Madison area”

  • “Worth the drive”

  • “A true old-school bakery”

Yelp reviewers mention how soft the donuts are and how shockingly fair the pricing is. Multiple people say they grew up coming here which is usually the ultimate bakery endorsement.

They’re especially known for their filled donuts and classic staples. No over-the-top, Instagram-stunt food. Just really well-executed basics.

What I Ordered

Keeping it simple (because science):

  • Double chocolate donut with buttercream filling

  • Cinnamon roll donut

Total: $2.70

Incredible.

My thoughts on the food

Quick disclaimer:
I had a root canal the day before filming this and had to chew on my left side only.
Commitment to the craft.

Cinnamon Roll Donut

Holy.

The icing melts in your mouth immediately. The bread is insanely soft. Not dense, not dry, just pillowy and perfect.

It’s sweet, but not overwhelming. The kind of donut you finish way faster than you intended.

Double Chocolate w/ Buttercream Filling

They told me this is one of their most popular donuts. First bite? Didn’t hit the filling. Mild disappointment.

Second bite?

Unreal.

The buttercream is light, fluffy, flavorful. It’s not heavy and not sickly sweet. When you get the perfect combo of soft dough + chocolate icing + cream filling, it’s elite-tier bakery behavior.

That said, I could only eat one of these. Two would’ve tipped into “too sweet” territory for me personally.

But one? Perfect.

Important & interesting info:

  • Google reviews consistently highlight the filled donuts and friendly service, with many calling it a “hidden gem” in Stoughton.

  • Yelp reviewers frequently mention the old-school bakery vibe and how affordable everything is.

  • Weekend mornings are busy, which honestly tells you everything you need to know.

  • It’s located right on Main Street in downtown Stoughton, making it an easy stop if you’re walking the strip.

Conclusion

Fosdal is simple. It’s local. It’s affordable.

And sometimes that’s exactly what you want.

If you’re anywhere near Stoughton and you want a classic donut done right, go.

And if you grab that buttercream-filled chocolate donut… chew on your strong side and enjoy it.
