This week’s Wisconsin restaurant pick: Swagat Indian Cuisine

I don’t say this lightly… this might be the best Indian food in the Madison area.

A ton of you kept DMing me:
“Go to Swagat.”
“You’re missing out.”
“Best buffet in Madison.”

I had to see if the hype was real. And I’ll be honest. I can’t believe I’ve lived here this long and never gone.

My life is different now. I’m a different man.

The Lowdown

  • City: Madison, WI

  • Address: 617 Junction Rd, Madison, WI 53717 (also in Sun Prairie and Dubuque)

The Ambiance

From the outside, you don’t fully realize how big this place is.

You walk in and it opens up into a large dining room with a full bar. Then you keep walking… And there’s another massive seating area in the back.

This place can handle volume.

And it does.

On weekends, I’m told it gets packed. We’re talking 200–300 people because they expand the buffet and bring out even more traditional options like goat and lamb.

It feels lively but not chaotic.

Great for groups.

Great for “I’m about to eat 3 plates and nobody judge me.”

About the restaurant:

Swagat is known locally for its Indian buffet.

Lunch buffet during the week.
Bigger, expanded buffet on weekends.

The weekend spread is where you’ll find more traditional proteins.

  • One of the strongest Indian buffets in Madison.

  • Very consistent.

  • Big portions.

  • Great value for the price.

  • Weekend buffet is the move.

Buffet pricing typically sits in the mid-$20s depending on lunch vs. weekend dinner.

For the amount and quality of food?
Very fair.

What I Ordered

Here’s my damage:

  • Chicken 65

  • Manchurian chicken

  • Chicken tikka masala

  • Gobi manchurian

  • Masala fries

  • Dosa

  • Ras malai

  • Mango, pistachio, coconut, and strawberry ice cream

Yes. I went all in.

My thoughts on the food

  • Chicken 65
Crispy, well-seasoned, and packed with garlic and ginger flavor. It had a solid kick and great texture from the fry. I personally prefer saucier Indian dishes, but this was still very good if you like bold, dry-style flavor.

  • Manchurian Chicken
I can’t believe I had never tried this before. Savory, slightly tangy, and coated in a sauce that makes you immediately go back for another bite. Crispy outside, tender inside. This was one of the biggest standouts on the table.

  • Chicken Tikka Masala
This is my measuring stick for any Indian restaurant. The chicken melts in your mouth and the sauce is creamy and rich without feeling heavy. The spice level is balanced and the flavor is exactly what you want from tikka masala. It absolutely delivers.

  • Gobi Manchurian
The crunch here was elite. Light, crispy exterior with fresh garlic flavor throughout. The sauce coats it well without making it soggy. One of my favorite Indian dishes and this version did not disappoint.

  • Masala Fries
Golden and genuinely crispy with seasoning that actually sticks. Simple but done really well. A dangerous side to add when you are already working through a buffet.

  • Dosa
Light, flaky, and crispy in a way that feels almost healthy even though you know it is not. Easy to keep eating without feeling overly heavy.

  • Ice Cream and Ras Malai
The ice cream was creamier and less sugary than standard ice cream, which made the flavors stand out more. Pistachio and mango were especially strong. The ras malai had a soft texture that I did not like. But I’m a texture guy so thats why.

Important & interesting info:

  • Weekend buffet expands significantly and includes more traditional options like goat, lamb, etc..

  • Frequently mentioned as one of the best Indian buffets in Madison on Reddit threads.

  • Google reviews consistently praise consistency + flavor depth.

  • Known for strong vegetarian options alongside meat dishes.

  • Large space makes it ideal for big groups and family dinners.

The online hype lines up with the real-life experience.

Conclusion

This might be my new #1 Indian spot in Madison. Full stop.

If you haven’t been:
Go on a weekend. Come hungry.
Try the manchurian even if you’ve never had it.
Don’t skip dessert.

And if you leave saying it’s not top-tier Indian in Madison…

I need to know where you’re going instead.
