This week’s Wisconsin restaurant pick: Taqueria Jalisco

If you like tacos that feel actually authentic (not “I put cumin on it so it’s Mexican” authentic)… you need to hit Taqueria Jalisco. I went on a random Tuesday and accidentally walked into the best kind of situation: $1 beef tacos.

Yes, one dollar.

The Ambiance

The space is… kinda awesome and kinda weird in the best way?

You walk in and:

  • menu is right in front of you

  • kitchen is right in front of you

  • seating is off to the left

  • to the right is a mini Mexican grocery store

  • and if you turn again you can grab Pepto + Tylenol like you’re preparing for the full human experience

Basically: tacos + groceries + emergency meds.

One stop shop.

About the restaurant:

Taqueria Jalisco is a taqueria that also doubles as an international grocery vibe (which… is usually how you know it’s gonna slap).

They’re set up for takeout and online ordering, and they’ve got a full menu posted online.

Also: they say they run a different “meal of the day” every day, so you can keep switching it up.

What I Ordered

  • $1 ground beef taco (Tuesday special)

  • Taco plate: 3 tacos + rice + beans ($12.99)

    • I did carnitas

    • chicken

    • campechano (chorizo + steak) - this was recommended to me and I’m glad I listened

  • Chicken + cheese quesadilla

My thoughts on the food

The beans: good.

The rice: a little hard / a little dry… flavor was there though. Not a deal breaker.

Campechano taco: absolute winner. Super flavorful and juicy. Add lime + their hotter hot sauce and it just simmers (in a good way).

$1 ground beef taco: street taco size, a little greasy (maybe too greasy), but it was legit and tasted way more real than the usual fast-food beef situation.

Chicken taco: really solid. Also street taco size with the double corn tortillas (you already know why).

Carnitas taco: my least favorite of the bunch - not bad, just needed a little more flavor. Weirdly good when you pair it with the beans.

Chicken + cheese quesadilla: tasted great, but if I’m being picky… I wanted a little more cheese and a little less chicken.

Overall: really good, authentic tacos, great value, and the people running it are super nice.

Important & interesting info:

  • Taco Tuesday deal: the online menu shows $1 Tuesday tacos (ground beef).

  • Yelp has them at 4.2 stars with 100+ reviews, and lists them as Mexican + grocery.

  • A bunch of folks call it a “hidden gem” / great value kind of spot, and it’s commonly framed as a counter-order, sit-down-after setup.

  • Their site lists hours as Mon–Sat 9am–9pm, Sun 10am–3pm.

Conclusion

If you’re in the mood for real-deal street tacos, go to Taqueria Jalisco off Allen Blvd in Middleton.

Go on Tuesday if you want the $1 taco moment.

And if you try the campechano… tell me if you become emotionally attached to it like I did.
