This week’s Wisconsin restaurant pick: Tipsy Cow

The Tipsy Cow Burger

This is one of those places that end up on literally every “best burger in Madison” conversation.

I finally stopped into Tipsy Cow downtown after hearing about it on:

  • Reddit threads

  • My food review comments

  • random friends who take burgers way too seriously

And honestly?

I kinda get the hype now.

It’s a place where you take someone from out of town when you want them to experience “peak Wisconsin” in one meal.

Burgers. Curds. Beer. Capitol views.
Hard combo to lose with.

The Lowdown

  • City: Madison, WI

  • Address: 102 Kind St, Madison, WI 53703

The Ambiance

Tipsy Cow has that perfect downtown Madison energy.

It’s busy without feeling chaotic. Casual without feeling lazy.

Inside feels like a classic Wisconsin tavern that got a modern upgrade:

  • brick

  • dark wood

  • loud enough to feel alive

  • but not “I have to scream at the person next to me” loud

And if you can snag patio seating near the Capitol during summer?

That’s elite Madison people-watching territory.

About the restaurant:

Tipsy Cow has been one of the staple burger spots downtown for years now, and after digging through reviews online… there’s a very consistent theme:

People are obsessed with:
👉 the Tipsy Burger
👉 the cheese curds
👉 and the fact that they fully lean into Wisconsin ingredients

A bunch of locals online kept mentioning the same thing too:
This isn’t a “fancy burger pretending to be casual.”

It’s just unapologetically messy Wisconsin bar food done really well.

They use stuff like:

  • Widmer’s brick cheese

  • Nueske’s bacon

  • Wisconsin cheddar

  • local beer selections

Which honestly explains why this place has stayed relevant in Madison’s burger scene for so long.

Also worth noting:
The downtown location is basically always in the conversation anytime someone asks:
“Where should I get a burger near the Capitol?”

What I Ordered

Went pretty aggressive here:

  • Memphis tots

  • Goat cheese curds

  • The Tipsy Burger

    • added jalapeños

  • Drinks while pretending I wasn’t about to enter a food coma

My thoughts on the food

Memphis tots
These stole the show for me. Seriously. Smoky seasoning, crispy tots, ridiculous flavor. I could not stop eating them. I’m still thinking about them which honestly feels unhealthy.

Goat cheese curds
I know people online LOVE these. For me? They were okay, but not life-changing. A little more creamy/block-cheese-ish than classic curds. Glad I tried them though.

The Tipsy Burger
This is one of those burgers where you immediately realize:
“Oh… this is gonna get messy.”

Double patties. Brick cheese. Bacon. Sauce everywhere.

The bottom bun got a little soggy, but weirdly… it worked? Didn’t ruin the burger at all.

The sauce
Whatever they’re putting on this burger is dangerous. Legit one of the better burger sauces I’ve had in Madison.

Jalapeños
Added them myself because I physically cannot order a burger without jalapeños anymore. The little crunch + spice makes every burger better.

Nueske’s bacon
Apparently this is legendary Wisconsin bacon and now I understand why people talk about it like it’s a family heirloom.

Important & interesting info:

  • What locals constantly say online:
One of the best burgers in Madison.

  • Best first order:
Tipsy Burger + Memphis tots. Easy decision.

  • The goat cheese curds are famous:
Even people who debate every burger spot in Madison still consistently bring these up.

  • Best time to go:
Patio season near sunset. Downtown Madison just hits different in summer.

  • Good to know:
This is not a “clean burger” place. Wear dark colors and commit to the experience.

Conclusion

Tipsy Cow feels like one of the safest recommendations in Madison.

Like if someone texted me:
“Need a burger spot downtown.”

This would immediately come to mind.

Is it the cheapest burger in Madison? No.

But between the atmosphere, the quality, the Wisconsin ingredients, and those absolutely ridiculous Memphis tots…

Yeah.
I’ll definitely be back. Especially for the tots. Those things had no business being that good.
