5 Bakeries I’d Drive Across Madison For

There are two types of people in this world:

People who “kinda like” bakeries.

And people who will absolutely ruin their entire day’s eating plans because they saw a laminated pastry behind glass.

I am unfortunately the second one.

So here are my current top five bakeries around Madison.

No ranking. No politics. No bakery wars.

Just places that have made me sit in my car afterward thinking:
“Yeah… that was worth it.”

#1: Bri’s Fresh Bakes

📍 1225 W Main St, Sun Prairie, WI 53590

This place is basically controlled chaos.

And I mean that as a compliment.

Bri's Fresh Bakes sells out constantly. There’s almost always a line. And every time I go, somebody is walking out holding a box like they just won the lottery.

Her croissants are the star.

Savory ones.
Pistachio ones.
Carrot cake-inspired ones.

Every single thing I’ve had there tastes like somebody obsessed over every layer.

Which… based on the lines… they clearly did.

Also important:
If you’re planning to go casually at noon expecting full inventory?

That’s adorable.

What to get:

  • Pistachio croissant

  • Savory croissants

  • Whatever is left honestly

Good to know:
Limited hours and they sell out often. This is not a “show up whenever” situation.

#2: Andi’s Bakes

📍 Online orders only (Order here)

This one feels different than the others because it’s smaller, more personal, and honestly feels like discovering somebody before they absolutely blow up.

The cookies are unreal. My favorite around Madison.

Soft, not crunchy cookiess. But so good.

Like dangerously good.

Not “Instagram cookie” good where it looks pretty but weighs four pounds and tastes like sugar paste.

These actually taste homemade in the best way possible.

The thing I love most is that everything feels intentional. You can tell somebody genuinely cares about baking and isn’t just trying to create viral food.

#3: Fosdal Home Bakery

📍 243 E Main St, Stoughton, WI 53589

Tiny bakery with BDE: Big donut energy.

Located right in downtown Stoughton, this place feels like stepping into the kind of bakery your grandparents would swear “used to be everywhere.”

And the donuts?

Ridiculous.

I’m telling you right now:
These are some of the best donuts you can get your hands on in Wisconsin.

Not trendy.
Not overloaded with cereal and candy.
Just insanely good classic donuts done perfectly.

The kind where you take one bite and immediately nod your head like an old guy who finally understands craftsmanship.

Also, if you go on a weekend morning, good luck pretending you’re only buying one.

Ambiance:
Cute little downtown bakery energy. Feels extremely Wisconsin in the best possible way.

#4: Bloom Bake Shop

📍 1851 Monroe St, Madison, WI 53711

Located on Monroe Street, which means parking is basically a competitive sport.

But honestly? Worth the headache.

This place somehow nails both the “beautiful bakery” vibe and the “holy crap this actually tastes incredible” part too.

The sweet potato donut is genuinely one of my favorite donuts in the Madison area. Maybe my favorite. It’s soft, not overly sweet, and somehow tastes like fall and happiness at the same time.

I also had their ham and gruyère croissant and immediately understood why people are obsessed with this place.

And multiple people told me their sandwiches are secretly some of the best in Madison. Like… better-than-the-places-known-for-sandwiches level.

I haven’t tried one yet, but now I feel obligated.

Good to know:
They also do gluten-free and vegan pastries really well, which usually means somebody in your group gets excited besides just you.

#5: Batch Bakehouse

📍 1402 Williamson St, Madison, WI 53703

Everything is just… consistently absurdly good.

I said this in my full review and I’ll stand by it:
I think they have the best ham and gruyère croissant around Madison.

I also had a chocolate cream cheese croissant that made me question whether I’ve been wasting my life eating lesser pastries.

And somehow even their cookies are elite.

Also shoutout to my in-laws because apparently the French bread from here has become a full-on family addiction.

What to get:

  • Ham & gruyère croissant

  • Chocolate cream cheese croissant

  • Fresh bread

  • Monkey bread if they have it

Other interesting info:
Batch has been around since 2009 and makes everything from scratch before dawn every day, which honestly explains a lot.

Final Thoughts

Madison’s bakery scene is quietly ridiculous.

You’ve got places making world-class croissants inside tiny storefronts, donut shops in small downtowns worth driving to at 7 a.m., and bakers selling out before lunch because the food is that good.

So if you’re looking for a weekend food crawl idea:

Skip the chains.
Grab a coffee.
Pick two of these places.
And go ruin your appetite in the best way possible.
